My Child Said What? Lizzo Edition

Or the importance of knowing your child is in the backseat

A few years ago, my husband and I were driving with our son. He was just over two at the time and barely speaking.

We were quite used to listening to the radio in the front seat and our son doing his own thing in the back. We fully expected that he wasn’t listening or at least understanding the words that he heard.

But of course we were proven wrong.

Lizzo’s song, Truth Hurts, comes on the radio and we both start singing along to it. We think nothing of it, until the words “I will never ever ever ever ever be your side chick,” echo out.

From the back seat we hear a little voice, “I won’t be no side chick.”

My husband and I stare at each other in shock, not sure if we have heard correctly.

We both look into the backseat in unison. There we find our innocent, two-year-old shaking his head vigorously with a serious expression on his face. He repeats “I won’t be no side chick.”

Keep in mind that this was perhaps the first time he had strung that many words together at one time, and of course these were the words he chose.

My husband and I burst out laughing. “Good for you, buddy,” my husband calls back to him. “You know your…
